Parrot Detection Camera Using Simple Hardware and Code

This project began as a simple question: is the parrot that used to visit my terrace still coming when I’m not around?

Using a Raspberry Pi, a camera module, and basic coding logic, I designed a 24×7 bird detection system that quietly observes, records, and logs bird activity. Beyond the technology, this project became an exercise in system design—learning how to filter noise, define meaningful events, and build something that works calmly in the background.

My Parrot Friend

Almost every day, this parrot would land on the same window ledge and quietly watch me work. Over time, it stopped feeling like a random visitor and started feeling familiar, almost intentional.

A Routine Forms

Feeding the parrot became part of the routine. These small, repeated interactions built a sense of trust and raised a simple question: was it still coming when I wasn’t around?

Human in the Loop

This project wasn’t just about birds—it was about a relationship. Being part of the frame makes the personal context visible and explains why the parrot’s disappearance mattered.

A Mysterious Disappearance!

Then one day, the parrot stopped coming. Days turned into weeks, and the ledge stayed empty. The absence became the problem that needed an answer.

Designing a Way to Know

To move beyond guessing, I installed a small camera on the ledge. The goal was simple: observe continuously, without needing to be present, and let the system quietly watch.

Software & Web Server — What the System Revealed

This is the BirdCam dashboard I built to review the system’s detections. A camera watches the window ledge continuously, and when the detection model is confident that a bird is present, the system captures a frame, timestamps it, and stores it as a bird event. The page shows a live view, bird count for the day, recent saved captures, and predicted time windows based on when birds typically appear (so I can check at the right moments without staring at the feed all day).

This turned the project into a real-world design + hardware + software system: simple observation, clear logging, and low-noise review. And the funniest (and most painful) output? The system worked reliably… but the captured visitors were only pigeons. The parrot I was looking for still hasn’t shown up — but now I have a way to know, instead of guessing.
